Entering Treatment - Evaluation, Detoxification and Stabilization

During the first stage of treatment each patient will complete a thorough medical assessment and, if needed, Detoxification (medically supervised withdrawal management). The patient will then undergo a multidisciplinary evaluation to substantiate, or clarify, his or her substance use disorder, and any other co-occurring psychiatric condition, using DSM-5 diagnostic criteria. After our internal/addiction medicine physician, psychiatrist and staff psychologists establish the patient’s diagnosis or diagnoses, we will use the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) Dimensional Assessment for Safety-Sensitive Professionals criteria to guide our recommendations regarding the type and length of treatment.

When applicable, and with the patient’s written permission, we will establish ongoing communication with those responsible for overseeing or ensuring the patient’s readiness to return to work.

After reviewing our findings and recommendations with the patient, the clinical team will develop a treatment plan outlining both the team’s and the patient’s treatment goals. The patient’s treatment team will then assist the patient in meeting these goals including those required for their readiness to return to work. The patient’s progress in treatment is reviewed on an ongoing basis throughout the course of his or her stay, as well as weekly by the entire treatment team.

Some of the basic elements of our Professionals Program include:

  • Comprehensive, ethical, and highly skilled evaluations for Medical Doctors, Pilots, Nurses, Dentists, Attorneys and members of safety sensitive professions.
  • Consistent communication with referents, wellness boards, colleagues, family members and other relevant participants crucial to success.
  • After-care planning that is accessible, easily integrated and reasonable.
  • Recovery planning and support that is both 12-step and non-12 step based.
  • Enrollment in monitoring agency if such a recommendation is required.

Residential Treatment Interventions

During the initial phase of treatment, each patient will learn that the phenomenon of addiction is a progressive and multifaceted process involving not only substance use, but genetics, bio-physiology and psychosocial vulnerabilities. This phase of treatment is designed to educate the patient about the nature of substance-related and addictive disorders. During this crucial phase of treatment, the patient will be guided and supported in their exploration of how their substance use has adversely affected their personal and professional lives, as well as the lives of those for whom they love and care.

As the patient begins to understand and internalize their powerlessness over addictive substances, the remainder of the treatment stay is designed to educate each patient not only about the neurological reality of addiction, but as importantly, supporting each patient in identifying and addressing the emotional, spiritual, intellectual and interpersonal underpinnings of their puzzling compulsion to use mood and mind altering substances. A clear understanding of the disease model of addiction coupled with the patient’s willingness to go to any lengths to experience real liberation will lead to the experience of not only sobriety, but a sense of serenity and a refreshing approach to life.

To accomplish this, we offer a safe, supportive and respectful drug treatment & rehab environment which includes:

  • Weekly medical and psychiatric care by highly qualified physicians.
  • Individual therapy with a doctoral level therapist at least twice a week.
  • Professional topic groups.
  • Daily recovery-focused group therapy.
  • Regular updates with referents.
  • Weekly family therapy sessions either in person or via Skype.
  • Bi-weekly participation in facilitated therapeutic monitoring groups.
  • Twice a week sessions with an assigned case manager.
  • Nutritional and spiritual counseling.
  • Daily exercise and access to holistic treatments like massage or acupuncture.
  • Review of patient progress every week by an experienced 10-person treatment team.
  • Recommendations and counseling for returning to work.
  • Initiation of post-treatment continuing care.

Professional Treatment Team

Our team is comprised of some of the most experienced and advanced addiction recovery professionals in the world.

Continuing Care & Returning to Work

Throughout the patient’s stay, the treatment team will be actively engaged in identifying the patient’s post-treatment monitoring and continuing care needs in concert with their licensing agency, monitoring agency, employer or wellbeing committee. Post-treatment continuing care plans are finalized well before discharge and typically include referrals to any needed ongoing medical, psychiatric or psychological care. They will include recommendations regarding therapeutic monitoring, fitness-for-duty and suggestions regarding the patient’s need for ongoing personal, familial and professional support. Prior to completing treatment, we urge our professionals to participate in a mutual support group dedicated to helping newly sober members of their professional community (e.g., Caduceus and International Doctors in Alcoholics Anonymous, Birds of a Feather, The Other Bar, etc.).

A Few Words Regarding Length of Stay

When working professionals realize they need help, decisions about the type, quality, length and cost of proper treatment may appear overwhelming. However, we urge you to give yourself the gift of a treatment experience that will afford you the time, support, direction and therapeutic modalities you need to avoid a relapse and regain your physical, emotional, intellectual, spiritual and professional wellbeing.

You have invested an immense amount of time, effort and dedication to your profession – give yourself the care and time you need to return to work without anxiety, embarrassment and doubt and with your abilities and gifts intact.

For our part, we will use the American Society of Addiction Medicine’s (ASAM) criteria, in concert with the recommendations or expectations of your licensing body, employer or professional health program, to ensure that your therapeutic needs have been met during your treatment stay. Depending upon the patient’s diagnosis/diagnoses, and his or her demonstration of their readiness to change, the length of stay for professionals intending to return to work is typically between 45 to 90 days.
